The famous Airedale Terrier Laddie Boy was the popular White House pet of President Warren Harding.
As the newly elected President of the United States, Warren Harding and a friend were discussing the new President acquiring a pet dog when he entered the White House.
Harding stated his dog breed preference from among all the breeds of dogs would be an Airedale Terrier.
The friend of President Harding knew of Charles Quetschke and his well regarded Airedale Terriers, and the friend contacted Quetschke about acquiring an Airedale Terrier for President Harding.
Charles Quetschke was a prominent Airedale Terrier breeder and exhibitor residing in Toledo, Ohio, and Charles knew finding a dog suitable for the rigors and the high visibility of life at the White House was of tantamount importance.
After considering all of the Airedale Terriers in residence at his Caswell Kennels, Charles Questschke decided to "re-acquire" a young Airedale Terrier he recently sold, an Airedale named "Laddie Boy".
Charles believed Laddie Boy was the Airedale Terrier best suited for life at the White House.
Laddie Boy and another young Airedale, an "understudy Airedale”, were skillfully trained by Quetschke for life at the White House as well as life in the eye of the global press.
Once the pair were trained, Charles determined that Laddie Boy was indeed the right Airedale Terrier to become the Presidential pet!
On March 5, 1921, Charles Quetschke presented Laddie Boy, the young Airedale Terrier, to President Warren Harding at the White House.
At 10:45 am, March 5, 1921, Laddie Boy became the official pet of the White House.
Laddie Boy was the son of the famous Airedale Terrier Ch. Tintern Tip Top, out of Caswell Maid.
The young Airedale received a great deal of publicity and fueled and enhanced the public's interest in the Airedale Terrier breed.
Laddie Boy was a loyal friend to President Harding and became well known across the nation!
The occasion of this true period photograph was the passing in 1923 of President Harding.
This great photograph is captioned "One of the Hardest Hit of All", as a photographer and writer communicate Laddie Boy mourning his beloved master.
Upon the passing of President Harding, a number of newspapers featured articles about Laddie Boy mourning and missing his master.
