ANDROCLES
The story of Androcles, the slave on the run from his
Roman master, was first told by Aulus Gellius about
150 A.D. and has since inspired many variations, includ-
ing Bernard Shaws play.
As Androcles hid in a cave, he trembled at the
approach of a lion. But instead of attacking him, the lion
lifted its paw, showing him a painful thorn. Androcles
extracted the thorn and the lion left him. But when he
was recaptured, the poor slave was condemned to fight
a lion for his life in the arena.
Imagine his surprise when the lion turned out to be the
animal he had helped. It remembered him and did him no
harm. The Romans were so surprised they gave both
Androcles and his lion their freedom.
